Seize the Moment – The Story of the First British Astronaut

Helen Sharman was working as a chemist when she heard the job advert that would make her rethink her career path and change her life. With over thirteen thousand applicants, Helen didn’t think she stood even the smallest chance of getting the job, but she was exactly the type of person the advert was looking for – calm, practical, professional, friendly and a team player. She was successful and, in May 1991, became the first British Astronaut into space on board the Russian Soyuz space craft. She spent 8 days orbiting the Earth, living and working – most of this time was spent on the Mir Space Station.

In her keynote session, Helen – a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for services to Science and Technology Educational Outreach – will tell us her incredible story, a story of pushing one’s own boundaries in order to achieve success. She will discuss her meticulous training and preparation, experience of learning Russian, the launch and landing, how weightlessness feels, her science experiments, the team spirit, and re-adjusting to life on Earth.

Making a Business Case for Procurement Technology Investment in your Organisation

Technology is an enabler of procurement, yet most companies either do not have a full S2P (Source-to-Pay) technology landscape or need to upgrade modular elements of it.

In her session, Jenny will:
  • Explore the opportunity digital transformation offers procurement.
  • Help you assess your digital readiness as an organisation.
  • Discuss the importance identifying the right-fit technology provider.
  • Offer guidance for making the case for investment within your business.
